Abstract: Kruger National Park (KNP) and Limpopo National Park (LNP) are both crucial elements within the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA), with KNP being a stronghold for lion (Panthera leo), and LNP being a stepping stone for dispersal towards the other national parks in the conservation area. However, Northern KNP and LNP are subjected to an increasing pressure on carnivore populations due to human–wildlife conflict, creating barriers hindering dispersal and jeopardizing their persistence in the landscape. To inform effective conservation strategies, it is essential to investigate crucial processes underlying the population dynamics of lions in the area, such as distribution, habitat preferences and, importantly, connectivity. For this purpose, an extensive dataset on lion has been gathered, including collar data, call-up data, camera trap data, environmental data and human–wildlife conflict data from previous and recent years. Using these data, we investigated (1) lion population numbers and distribution in the area, (2) human–wildlife conflict hotspots (3) the impact of human activity on movement and ranging behaviour of lions in LNP and KNP, (4) identify potential corridors and explore the implications for predator connectivity in the GLTFCA. We present preliminary results and discuss future steps.
