Biography
My research interests are multi-disciplinary and derives from my under-graduate Fine Arts , Honours & Masters (English Literature & Cultural Studies - 2003) and my PhD study (Education-2021).My Master’s degree comprised of both course-work as well a mini dissertation. In the mini dissertation I focused on gender and identity within the backdrop of Mary Wollstonecraft. It was during my Master’s degree that I encountered different genres for example the working class novel, Marxism etc. that provided a strong foundation in preparing me for a PhD study that was completed in 2021. During the process of writing my PhD thesis I discovered myself bridging a realm between academia and my creative spirit which resulted in me asserting my stance as a bricoleur (theoretical, methodological and creative). My research interests also draws from a voice that is rooted in both academic canon and in the personal. For me these autobiographical details are important as growing up and working in South Africa with all of its political both pre and post 1994 have played a major influence on my life. These multiple methods allow for my reflective and artistic voice to simultaneously accompany my academic voice . It was also during my PhD study that I found my “writing voice” . Thus the writing process that occurred during my PhD was a key aspect in discovering aspects about my stance as both researcher and writer . Besides being a bricoleur, travelling on my PhD journey that intersects between education and cultural studies, and engaging with the texts and theory enabled me to enter the realm of critical scholar/activist and a public intellectual. Establishing myself as a bricoleur, my engagement with theory and literature draws from multiple influences. From the pain and anguish of Angelou’s poetry to the philosophy of Marx etcetera , the influence and inspiration that contribute to my ontology as well as my writing style is thus vast and varied drawing from multiple sources in forging my identity as a researcher.
