Biography
Tim Forssman is an Associate Professor in Culture and Heritage Studies at the University of Mpumalanga, South Africa, and an affiliated researcher at the University of Pretoria and the University of Oxford. His research explores later Holocene histories in southern Africa, with particular focus on forager-farmer interactions, indigenous knowledge systems, craft and trade systems, and the social significance of material culture and landscapes. He has held academic positions at the Universities of Pretoria and the Witwatersrand, and has worked in both academic and applied archaeological contexts, including dam mitigation projects in Lesotho.
Tim currently leads the Hunter-Gatherer Archaeological Research Project, which investigates the role of foragers in the socio-political developments of the middle Limpopo Valley. This includes the Thulamela Archaeological Research programme, focusing on complexity, identity, and trade during the rise of early states in the region. His work is supported by grants from the National Research Foundation under the African Origins Platform and Competitive Programme for Rated Researchers.
He is a member of the editorial board for Azania: Archaeological Research in Africa, a specialist editor at the Journal of Southern African Field Archaeology, and an intern at the South African Journal of Science. Tim actively contributes to collaborative research and capacity-building initiatives in southern Africa through engagement programmes such as a travelling museum initiative and field training programmes.
His most recent book, Foragers in the Middle Limpopo Valley: Trade, Place-making, and Complexity, examines forager participation in long-distance exchange and regional political networks, and his new book, Archaeology in Africa: Why the past matters, will be released in June 2026. Currently, a manuscript titled Ivory, Gold and Power: Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean World, c. AD 600-1900, written with Peter Delius and Linell Chewins, is under review.
