Biography
Professor Timothy Dube is a globally recognized full Professor of Geospatial Science and Director of the Institute for Water Studies at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa, whose research is fundamentally aligned with achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on the environment and resource security in Africa. His work leverages cutting-edge technologies including satellite remote sensing, machine learning, and big data analytics to generate high-accuracy, actionable intelligence for policy-makers. His foundational contributions directly address SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through pioneering research on water resources monitoring, especially for the often-overlooked non-perennial rivers (N-PRs) in semi-arid regions, which comprise two-thirds of sub-Saharan Africa's waterways; his team’s development of AI models that estimate water availability in these intermittent systems with high accuracy is a vital tool for sustainable water resource management (Target 6.4 and 6.6). Furthermore, by tracking the impacts of climate change on the hydrological cycle, invasive species mapping, and land-cover analysis, his research provides critical data for SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), supporting ecosystem conservation, drought mitigation, and climate adaptation strategies. His application of geospatial methods to agricultural water use and crop monitoring also contributes significantly to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by enhancing water-use efficiency and supporting resilient agricultural practices (Target 2.4). Prof. Dube's commitment extends to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), as evidenced by his extensive international collaborations with bodies like the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Union (EU), where he served as a Principal Investigator for Africa in projects like TIGER-Bridge, promoting knowledge and skills transfer to enhance policy formulation and decision-making for sustainable economic development across the SADC region.
