Biography
FULL PROFESSOR IN BIOCHEMISTRY & MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AT THE CBS, UNIVERSITY OF SFAX, TUNISIA
Prof. Bassem JAOUADI obtained his Baccalaureate in Experimental Sciences in 1998 at the Secondary School of Maknassi (Sidi Bouzid). He received the Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, the Master’s degree in Molecular and Cell Biology, and the Ph.D degree in Biological Sciences from the Faculty of Sciences of Sfax (FSS), University of Sfax (US), Tunisia, in 2002, 2004, and 2009, respectively. His Ph.D research was done in the CBS, under the supervision of Prof. S. BEJAR & Prof. S. ELLOUZ-CHAABOUNI. The title of his Ph.D degree is “A novel glycosylated alkaline protease from Bacillus pumilus CBS: biochemical, molecular, and structural studies, and industrial applications in detergence and tannery” which was awarded by the Best Thesis Prize by the FSS-US in 2009. In 2010 Prof. JAOUADI integrated the CBS as Assistant Professor where he continued his research in the field of the novel microbial enzymes for industrial applications. Since, he was a principal investigator of some bilateral and national projects and convention, where he strongly promoted the biotechnology in Tunisia. He has undertaken many works concerning the performing of biotechnology process. He also developed many works relative to the screening, biochemical, molecular, and structural studies as well as scale-up tests of some industrial enzymes. In 2014 he gets the University Habilitation degree (HU) in Bioengineering entitled “bacterial proteases and peroxidases for Biotechnology interests” at the National Engineering School of Sfax, US. Since 2015-2019 and 2020 up to now he is Associate Professor and Full Professor, respectively at the CBS, US. Prof. JAOUADI has many training international courses in France, Italy, Algeria, and Turkey. He has also participated in some Meetings and Courses of ICGEB, theoretical and practical courses "Molecular modeling and structure-function relationships studies of enzymes of biotechnological interest" and “Bioinformatics and analysis of genomic data” in Sfax-Tunisia and "Bioinformatics: Computer Methods in Molecular and Systems Biology" in Trieste-Italy. He guided nearly 40 graduate and post-graduate students to accomplish their project, master or thesis work on industrial microbial enzymes. Under his supervision, ten students received their Ph.D. degree and currently nine more students are working for their Ph.D. He succeeded to have several collaborations with some national and international Biotech companies. He is a member of the Horizon Europe CSA-Twinning project “NGS-4-ECOPROD” (Grant agreement ID: 101079425) and the ENI Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Italy-Tunisia “ARIBiotech” C-5-2.1-41 (CUP I55F21003350006) and was also a leader several national and international projects mainly National Program for Technological Innovation (PNRI) and bilateral and multilateral projects with France, Algeria, and Morocco (CNRS-DGRS, R&F, RDP, and LABEX-TA, and PHC-Maghreb) and. Since July 2017 and 2020 Prof. JAOUADI is the CEO and founder of the biotech start-up in the Business Incubator of the CBS called "Biotech ECOZYM" and the spin-off “ENZYin”, respectively. He is expert and consulting in white biotechnology sector and he gives a technical assistance in setting up Biotech start-ups/spin-offs as well as expert in drafting and patent analysis, and drafting and editing EU project H2020, Prima, Horizon Europe, etc. Prof. JAOUADI has been invited for many conferences in Tunisia, France, Algeria, Turkey, and Finland. He is a member of the scientific and organizing committee of the Maghrebian-Finnish Biotechnology Symposium 2016 (Hammamet-Tunisia) and 2018 (Juva-Finland), the JIB 2010-2021 of the Tunisian Association of Biotechnology (ATBiotech), the 3rd, 4th, and 5th International Workshop on Industrial Biotechnology, the III International Leather Engineering Congress: Innovative Aspects for Leather Industry (IAFLI), the Euro-Mediterranean Conference for Environmental Integration (1st EMCEI 2017, 2nd EMCEI 2019, and 3rd EMCEI 2021) organized by Springer Nature, and actively participated on the organization of many scientific national and international meetings and seminars in Biotechnology. Prof. JAOUADI’s original findings were presented in international scientific meetings and have been published in top biotechnological journals with international circulation including Bioresource Technology, Biochimie, BMC Biotechnology, Journal of Biotechnology, PLoS One, International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, Extremophiles & Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering, and presented in international scientific meetings. He has more than 100 publications in periodic journals, 45 national patents and seventy invited book chapters.
