Biography
Prof Gerrit van der Waldt matriculated in 1983 in Beaufort West. Prior to his present appointment, he was employed at the South African Communication Services (former Bureau for Information) as Information Specialist in Cape Town and served in Parliament during the time of CODESA. He was also attached to UNISA for nine years. Gerrit holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Stellenbosch (1992), entitled: The application of strategic change management for the transformation of the Public Service. He is currently Research Professor: Governance attached to the Research Focus Area: Social Transformation at North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus). He has extensive experience in the application of Project and Strategic Management for various institutions, including Tshwane Metro Council, Department of Welfare, local authorities and has presented courses for Wits Business School, the Northern Province Consortium, POPCRU and SAPU, the Institute for Government, Fort Hare University and the University of Stellenbosch. He also presented various short courses and workshops on Programme & Project Management to senior public managers hosted by various institutions. He also presents various municipal capacity-building programmes for local government and serves on the Board of Directors of the Thembalitsha Foundation, the Local Government Training Institute, and developed various SAQA-registered certificates in conjunction with SALGA and the Local Government SETA. His research output includes 30 academic text books and 80 articles in accredited national and international journals. He successfully delivered 32 Masters and 13 PhD studies. He currently serves on the School for Social and Government Studies’ Research Committee as well as the Faculty’s Committee for Advanced Degrees at the University. He is Deputy Editor of Administratio Publica, a Board Member of the Journal of Public Administration (SAAPAM), and serves on the Advisory Board and developed study material for Millpark Business School and the Southern Business School. He took part in various research projects including a skills audit of 300 staff members for the Office of the Presidency; community outreach projects for local government councillors in conjunction with the Joint Centre for Political and Economic Studies (USA); and community participation in local government and development projects. He also partakes in various research projects for the Focus Area: Social Transformation at NWU, and is involved in the development and presentation of the Executive Development Programme for the Senior Management Service (SMS) hosted by PALAMA/School of Government. He designed, developed and currently presents the module on Programme and Project Management for all Senior Public Managers in the South African Public Service. He also served on the Audit Committee of Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality. Prof van der Waldt presented papers at various national and international conferences including at the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Africa Summit on the role of local and provincial government in the implementation of NEPAD. He is also a member of the global Associate Academic Federation attached to the WEF. He also lectured and conducted research at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He was also appointed (2014) as global expert by the International Swedish Institute for Public Administration (SIPU) to partake in the design and development of a Masters Programme in Local Government Studies for Rwanda and other African countries. He is a NRF-rated researcher and is currently Research Professor in Public Governance. His main academic interests include Project Management, Performance Management, Organisational Development and Public Administration Theory and the Theory of Governance.
