Biography
I obtained my PhD in the field of Biochemistry and my research focus was on understanding the underlying mechanisms involved in the chemopreventative properties of herbal tea extracts against skin carcinogenesis. During my PhD project, I optimized an in vitro UVB model of skin carcinogenesis with keratinocytes to characterize the anti-inflammatory and protective properties of herbal tea extracts and their polyphenolic compounds in skin. The project generated 4 publications, gained research attention at the Stellenbosch University which was conveyed at different platforms to industry and the general public. The publicity of the rooibos project gave me an opportunity to be selected by the NRF and AIMS institute to mentor young girls and tertiary students in STEM and to be profiled as one of the emerging researchers in South Africa in a booklet (https://live.fundza.mobi/home/library/non-fiction-books/because-science-is-fun/) that was endorsed by the Department of Science and Technology in South Africa. To expand my immunological knowledge, I had the opportunity of characterizing the pathological role of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in the development and progression of Tuberculosis, using exosomes as a predictive tool. The work on exosome led to the formation of first Exosome Interest Group in South Africa, with other fellow researchers provided me with sound functional knowledge in the field of proteomics. This knowledge allowed me an opportunity to be a co-author in a paper "Interrogating Fractionation and Other Sources of Variability in Shotgun Proteomes Using Quality Metrics" that was recently accepted for publication. The publication mainly focuses on the quality assessment of proteomics data from M.tb, exosomes and MDSCs. Interacting with MDSC experts in the world, I also had an opportunity to publish a review paper on the “Emerging role of MDSC in Tuberculosis” Currently my research interest is on the protective effects of Honeybush polyphenolic compounds against epithelial barrier dysfunction and allergy development in skin in vitro and I am applying some of the skills that I have acquired in an ‘omics approach’ to characterize the anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic and cytoprotective effects of Honeybush extracts in skin keratinocytes in vitro. The aim is to identify molecular targets that, in future, can assist in the development of a Honeybush anti-allergenic topical product for skin. In order to fully understand the mechanistic action of Honeybush extracts and data that will be generated from this project, I would love to gain more knowledge in the field of bioinformatics and 3-D skin development characterization.
