Biography
Dr. Tanja Coetzer is a dedicated lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), specialising in the Foundation Phase. She holds a Doctoral degree (D.Ed.) in Language and Mathematics in Education. Her research focuses on children learning in classroom contexts where the Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT) is different from their home language. Dr. Coetzer, an emerging researcher, received the University Capacity Development Grant (UCDG) under the Improvement of Qualifications Programme (IQP) in 2021/2022 for her doctoral study. After completing her doctoral studies, she was awarded the prestigious EASA Postgraduate Doctoral Medal in 2023. Dr. Coetzer is actively involved in various innovative educational projects. She leads the Foundation Phase Unplugged Coding Project at CPUT, which explores the integration of coding in early education. Her work extends to curriculum development and teacher training at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute (CTLI). Dr. Coetzer's academic contributions include publications in peer-reviewed journals and active participation in professional organisations such as the Education Association of South Africa (EASA) and the World Education Research Association (WERA). She is committed to advancing educational practices, particularly in multilingual classrooms.
