This study aims to investigate job satisfaction and the general well-being of employees in a higher education institution. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in South Africa are seen as consistently failing their employees: their needs are not satisfied nor is their Quality of Work Life (QoWL) increased. This study employed a quantitative research approach whereby 160 structured questionnaires were distributed and 142 returned (generating a rate of 89%). This study revealed that the majority of employees (76%) have clear goals and opportunities for development (65%). This was not the case for the large number of respondents (42%) who were depressed and felt that there was a lack of career opportunities (47%). This study will assist the university line managers to develop strategies for improving the QoWL for all employees, thus achieving the university goals.en_US
