Recent advances in telecommunication and video coding techniques has led to the development of H.264, and since its development, this video coding standard is being adopted in application standards and industry consortia specifications. However, the literature reveals that most of the work that has been done in video traffic characterisation and modelling is based on previous coding standards, which do not include H.264. Therefore, in order to fill this gap this paper presents the characterisation and modelling of H.264 encoded video traffic. Video is encoded using H.264 encoding technique and a trace file is generated. Statistical analysis is performed on the generated traces. Then, based on the statistical analysis, a suitable model is constructed and a synthetic traffic is generated using the proposed model, which in this case is FARIMA. Lastly, the proposed model is validated using the autocorrelation function.en_US
