Abstract: The problem the world faces is that many of the resources that are truly threatened are the renewable ones, not, as so often assumed, the non-renewables. Many of the earth’s renewable resources are being insanely over-exploited, and humanity seems incapable of agreeing on rules for their protection. Fish, large mammals, fresh water, timber, clean air – the list is endless. In contrast, many non-renewable reserves have become so plentiful that their prices are presently at historic lows. The question is: how has it come about that our non-renewable reserves are seemingly inexhaustible?

Abstract: For thousands of years, some of the most intelligent men alive sought such things as&#xD;
the Philosopher’s Stone, which could turn dross into precious metal; the elixir of&#xD;
immortality; and the alkahest or universal solvent. The searches were in vain. The&#xD;
world needed more than a magic wand.&#xD;
There is nothing inherently wrong in belief. Belief is only a hypothesis in search of a&#xD;
demonstration. The history of science is replete with the beliefs of great, wise men who&#xD;
struggled to understand Nature. Aristotle’s four elements, re,&#xD;
earth, water and air,&#xD;
ruled chemistry and medicine for thousands of years. Eventually, careful measurements&#xD;
showed that re&#xD;
had no mass, that earth was composed of elements, that life did not&#xD;
spring from water, and that air was a mixture, not a substance in its own right.&#xD;
Alchemy was universal. Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Jew all pursued it.

Abstract: The raw data that is fed to NASA in order to develop the global temperature series is subjected to “homogenization” to ensure that it does not suffer from such things as the changes in the method of measuring the mean temperature, or changes in readings because of changes in location. However, while the process is supposed to be supported by metadata – i.e. the homogenizers are supposed to provide the basis for any modification of the raw data.
