Abstract: RESEARCH AND TEACHING in the&#xD;
Department of Architectural Technology at&#xD;
the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) are increasingly focused on live&#xD;
projects in local communities. Live projects&#xD;
‘offer potential sites for critical pedagogies and&#xD;
creative agency that in turn support individual and social transformations’ (Morrow and&#xD;
Brown, 2012:1). They can be de  ned as collaborative design projects, where solutions are&#xD;
researched, developed and sometimes constructed by students, with a resultant outcome&#xD;
that is valuable to the end user (Sara, 2006:1).&#xD;
The Design-Build Research Studio&#xD;
(DBRS) at CPUT was formed in 2011, and&#xD;
students have since completed several projects, including the design and building of an&#xD;
outdoor classroom (2011), the conversion of&#xD;
a container into a library (2012), and participation in an informal settlement reblocking&#xD;
project (2013). This paper describes the last&#xD;
project’s process and comments on the integration of live project pedagogy into the architectural curriculum.</description>

Abstract: In the South African context, toys represent a wide variety of games and are linked&#xD;
to material and socio-cultural conditions. Some toys are used to teach the&#xD;
local culture and traditional values. The shapes of traditional toys are the result of one&#xD;
rich creativity where children have room to experiment, experience and learn.&#xD;
This article highlights the history of South Africa's indigenous toy design as well&#xD;
their influence on the design of contemporary toys. Like many developing countries,&#xD;
however, South Africa experiences an influx of imported toys which essentially does not&#xD;
they have relevance on local cultures or knowledge, causing the slow disappearance of toys&#xD;
traditional. The effectiveness of traditional toys in South Africa is linked to the traditions of the groups&#xD;
local cultural. Sustainability, aesthetics, cultural relationships, materials, skills, availability of resources,&#xD;
robustness and finally the environmental perspective represent a fundamental part of the design&#xD;
toys that come from the traditional South African context.</description>

Abstract: It is essential for designers to keep up with evolving technologies so that they&#xD;
can function within the networked knowledge economy. However, there is a growing&#xD;
awareness that, because design outcomes are purpose driven and practical, designers&#xD;
should have the knowledge and skills to be able to move comfortably between the&#xD;
real and the virtual worlds. The intention of this article is to examine an integrated,&#xD;
multidisciplinary design foundation course in South Africa, with the aim of demonstrating&#xD;
that the development of drawing skills or “thinking through making” should continue&#xD;
to play a significant role in educating designers. “Learning to see” through drawing&#xD;
can develop the necessary self-awareness and self-confidence in students to enable&#xD;
them to engage in the iterative creative process—thereby encouraging generative&#xD;
self-criticism. Moreover, drawing as a subject, when strategically planned within the&#xD;
design foundation curriculum, can contribute to creating the “white/open space” that&#xD;
encourages intuitive thinking to take place in novice designers.</description>

Abstract: Therapeutic art plays an important role in patient recovery in hospitals. Art therapy in prescribed terms captures the use of arts and words to express ones feelings. Unlike many developed parts of the world, art rarely plays a significant role in the healing processes at hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa. While waiting to see medical officers or during admissions in the hospital, patients often find themselves either staring at blank walls or looking at health informational images — two extremes of the imagery spectrum. This may psychologically have a positive or negative impact on the health of the patient.</description>
