One of our proudest moments was getting Senate and other university structures’ approval for a proposed compulsory Information Literacy Course for all new students. This will go a long way in ensuring the library’s contribution towards First Year Experience and students’ retention. It is our strong belief that once students have acquired information literacy skills they can continuously utilise them – not only in their studies but throughout their lives. The building projects in Wellington and Mowbray are close to completion and we expect to resume operations in the new spaces in early 2017. On the regional, national and international scene – we continue to play our role in making contributions to various activities and projects. We continue to host and manage the CHELSA Statistics Database for University Libraries – with close to three quarters of the state universities now utilising the database. The Library has made major contributions towards the Western Cape Data Intensive Research Project and has been recognised for taking a lead in RDM activities and given a key role to develop policies and guidelines for the Project as well as coordinate the training of librarians, IT personnel and scientists who will be working on the project. Our exchange programme with Virginia Tech continues to yield very positive results – with staff on both sides visiting and sharing important information towards the development of our libraries. In IATUL (The International Association of University Libraries) our voice remains strong in shaping its international programmes at Board level and the Special Interest Group on Information Literacy. The 2016 budget allocation was favourable and together with other funding from the Teaching Development Grant we were able to fulfil our collection development mandates. The Teaching and Development Grant has also provided an opportunity to grow our e-books collection. In 2016 we started working on the Open Educational Resources Project and have succeeded in setting up the necessary infrastructure for the growth and development of the project. Our existence within the Knowledge Information and Technology Services (KITS) Division since 2013 has enabled us to leverage new technologies, services and approaches to the delivery of our core business to the university community. The collaboration with faculties and departments has been growing from strength to strength especially in the provision of Information Literacy programmes by faculty librarians. We continue to enjoy strong partnerships and relationships with the Research Technology, Innovation and Partnerships Division and through this we have been able to advance research data management services, bibliometrics and advanced information literacy programmes to the research community. As a university library we have taken a lead in the country in building research data management services, systems and structures and we hope to build on this sound foundation. On the national and regional level we continue to play an important role in CALICO, CHELSA, SANLIC and the professional association LIASA. At international level a number of exchange programmes with two universities – Virginia Tech in the United States and Oslo and Akershus University College in Norway (HOiA) – enabled successful staff exchange activities and as well as joint workshops and presentations. The financial challenges that the Higher Education sector in South Africa are facing are also impacting negatively on some of our operations. Some of the electronic databases have been cancelled and the introduction of VAT on electronic resources has seen our overall expenditure on information resources go down. This poses a threat to the growing research landscape at CPUT that needs to be supported with a sustainable information resource base. In 2016 we will continue to strengthen our collaborations and partnerships to ensure that library services and products are at the core of supporting the institutional goal of being at the HEART OF TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION in AFRICA Description: Annual Report 2015 Thu, 01 Jan 2015 00:00:00 GMT http://hdl.handle.net/11189/3692 2015-01-01T00:00:00Z http://hdl.handle.net/11189/1778 Title: CPUT Library Annual Report 2013 Authors: Chiware, Elisha RT Abstract: The year 2013 saw CPUT Libraries expand its international networks, thereby introducing global perspectives and opportunities for future development. This included the cooperation with Virginia Polytech on the development of a joint MOOC (massive open online course) and that with Technical University Munich on research data management. These projects will prove important as the Library moves towards hosting a repository for research and other intellectual property outputs. The hosting of the 34th IATUL (International Association of Technological University Libraries) Conference during April 2013 was a significant contribution to the development of libraries in South Africa, attracting 160 delegates with roughly 50% international participants. The subsequent appointment of Dr Elisha Chiware, Director of CPUT Libraries, as Secretary of IATUL further cemented CPUT’s position within the international library community. At the same time, the Library has continued on a path of modernising its services, including the development of open student spaces to improve the student library experience, and the sourcing of e-books to supplement student learning material. Such initiatives have allowed the Library to share the responsibility of promoting student success with faculties and academic departments. Further to this, the Library made headway during 2013 in working closely with faculties, through its Faculty Librarians, in addressing the access to learning material at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This included linking into the LMS and Blackboard systems to post relevant literature for student reference. With a clear vision for the future through a well-structured strategic plan, CPUT Libraries is poised to improve its service delivery into the future, towards an integrated resource for the benefit of learning and scholarship at CPUT.
