Abstract: This poster presents the results of an experimental investigation into the physical properties of the cementing materials from the 1700s and 1800s. The samples were collected from the South African political heritage building, Robben Island and analysed.&#xD;
The original plaster, render bedding mortar and floor material from the island’s oldest buildings were composed of seashell aggregates and lime as binder.&#xD;
Some sections of the render, plaster and raised pointing were cement-based. These take up a minority area of the buildings and were referred to a recently repaired areas. In most areas where such cement‐based materials were used, the materials show signs of detaching from the original surfaces</description>

Abstract: The project started as an educational&#xD;
exchange program in 2010 between CPUT&#xD;
and The Hague University for Technology.&#xD;
The project focuses on the problem of&#xD;
people in informal settlements not having&#xD;
warm water and on decreasing the cost of&#xD;
creating warm water for middle income&#xD;
groups. People in these informal settlements currently&#xD;
use kettles on gas stoves as well as electric&#xD;
kettles if they have electricity, but both of&#xD;
these ways are expensive to them with the&#xD;
current increases in electricity prices in South&#xD;
Africa. People in middle income households&#xD;
are also affected by the increases in electricity&#xD;
and are seeking alternative solutions, but&#xD;
current systems available on the market are&#xD;
extremely expensive.</description>
