Biography
PraysGod Mhlongo is a lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Cape Peninsula University of Technology and an applied linguist. His scholarly interests fall within the following domains: Acquisition of English as a second language, language learning motivation (LLM) in multilingual contexts/language learning motivation and multilingualism, motivational teaching practice (MTP), teacher motivation and well-being, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and language learning, and GenAI in education. His teaching work is grounded in Motivational Teaching Practice/Philosophy (MTP/P), which aims to align teaching with students’ learning needs in order to initiate and enhance motivation for learning/engagement purposes. MTP/P is embedded in the belief that we all possess varying language abilities, which can be improved through motivation, and that what often sets apart successful students from unsuccessful or struggling ones is the strength of their motivation. His research agenda entails, therefore, finding motivation-aligned interventions that 1) promote teacher well-being, job satisfaction, and teaching motivation, which, in turn, may influence students’ motivation; 2) promote student/learner engagement; cultivate student autonomy; and sustain long-term learning motivation of students learning English as a Second Language (ESL) in multilingual contexts.
