Abstract: This article reports on quantitative and qualitative studies that were conducted to assess what residents of the Western Cape expect from South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup. In general, those residing in the city of Cape Town and those who declare themselves supporters of football, show a high level of optimism about the potential economic growth as a result of the tournament. However, the residents outside the metropolitan core are less convinced that the World Cup will benefi t them directly.
